Dominion Exhibition Display Building No. II | Brandon, MB
In 2009, MCM Architects had began working with the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba to repair and restore Display Building No. II. Following an in-depth facility audit and future development viability and feasibility study, a multi-phased plan was developed to ensure sustainability of the heritage status building originally constructed in 1913. The goal was to restore the exterior of the heritage designated building to its original design while maintaining as much of the original cladding and detailing as possible and reintroducing the original clerestory windows; a key part of its original Beaux-Arts design. The interior was redeveloped for an office and display space, while retaining the original heavy timber trusses/columns, and the exposed wood deck / joists.
MCM worked closely with the client to develop a multi-phase project plan in accordance to funding parameters. Due to limited funding and ongoing fundraising efforts each phase targeted various aspects of the building throughout its restoration process. As a national historic site, the initial phases focused on structural reinforcing of the existing building and foundation. Once structurally sound, restoration to the exterior elevations including wood cladding, trim and windows began.
The interior development was designed and constructed as a second skin to the existing wall system in order to maintain breathability while providing the environmental separation required to meet current building codes.
