W.C. Miller Gymnasium Addition & Renovation | Altona, MB
The 12,000 square foot addition to the W.C. Miller Collegiate provides a new 9,000 sq.ft. gymnasium and a 1,300 sq.ft. fitness room to the existing school.
The new addition is comprised of a new gymnasium with change rooms, a storage room, barrier-free washrooms and a fitness room. The new addition was designed with a separate access and can be secured to operate independent from the existing school. A new link corridor provides access to the existing school, while also serving as an entrance foyer and gathering space for after-hour access, or when hosting community events or performances.
Energy efficient design solutions were integrated into the scope of building addition. Considerations on building orientation, spatial planning, day lighting, selection of materials and mechanical and electrical systems were made not only for their environmental impact, but also for their contribution to a community-based learning centre designed to foster growth and well-being of all occupants of the new space.
Architectural materials and finishes were carefully selected to be sympathetic to the existing school and to provide occupants with bright, warm, and inviting spaces for daily student and after-hour community use. Energy efficiency and durability were also key considerations in the specification of architectural, mechanical and electrical systems; the building design is targeted to achieve a LEED™ Silver rating.
