Ecole Discovery Trails School & Childcare | Morden, MB

LEED® Gold Target

Discovery Trails School is a new two storey 73,000 sq. ft. facility with 450 students from kindergarten to grade 8 with a 74 space childcare facility attached. The school was designed to accommodate an eight classroom addition that would accompany an additional 200 students, increasing the school population to 675 students from the Morden area. The school and childcare facility is integrated into a new community along with adjoining park land.

The development of the school site includes; a regulation size soccer pitch, an eight lane 400m running track, outdoor classroom, junior soccer pitches, early years play areas and the integration of bio diverse drought tolerant planting areas with prairie grasses and landscape planting.

The skylit central commons floods the main gathering space with natural light and acts as a circulation hub for the school, with the gymnasium, multi-purpose and library all connected to the central commons. The two-storey commons connects multiple program spaces allowing for uninterrupted flow between the main and second floors.

The design is to LEED Gold sustainable standards and includes reservoirs for rain water harvesting, natural landscaping, energy efficient heating and HVAC equipment, orientation to maintain use of natural lighting within instructional spaces.
