CTV National new stories about Safe House and Hotel Grand Opening
The Pikangikum Community Safe House will be a place of refuge to provide safe and secure shelter, emotional relief and culturally appropriate services for individuals in the community seeking to escape violence or abuse. It will be a place where people can come to find sanctuary, peace and healing.
The Safe House will be committed to assisting victims of abuse; women and their children in the difficult transition from an abusive and violent domestic environment to a positive, independent, and non-violent lifestyle. The facility would primarily offer safe, temporary shelter with access to support services for Women, Children, Elders, LGBTQ who are victims of the many facets of family violence.
The Safe House will include a diverse number of flexible program spaces to enable it to provide a broad range of services. Project planning and programming has been developed in an effort to make the facility financially and environmentally sustainable with cultural elements incorporated in recognition of Pikangikum’s Ojibway culture and heritage.
Functional programming will include a large central common area that will act as the facility’s hub, housing administrative, security, professional offices, an elder’s office and common tenant spaces. A wing of the building will be developed to house to the facility’s clients, with suites designed for family occupancy as required for temporary, short-term residence. The Safe House will also include a hotel accommodation component for visiting professional service providers.
