Ecole Dugald School Daycare
| Dugald, MB
The new Dugald Daycare accommodates 48 school age children, 10 toddlers and 16 infants in a typical suburban setting. Adjacent to the school and residential housing the exterior form of the building captures a residential theme. The exterior form exploits an intimate human scale through the use of generous hipped roof complete with large overhangs reflecting themes from the surrounding neighborhood. Exterior colours focus on neutral tones to harmonize the daycare form into the residential fabric.
Interior architecture of the building is organized into three distinct zones. The central public zone is configured as a spine that organizes user circulation and bisects the building into two private functional zones. The primary volume of functional space is located south of the spine and dedicated as a childcare zone. Direct circulation from the spine offers access to each individual activity space. It’s also set contiguous to the park like playground of Dugald School, this positioning promotes an intimate engagement both visual and sensory between children and our exterior environment. The secondary volume of functional space is located north of the central spine and contains a central core of utility functions that service the building while providing a buffer to the adjacent street traffic.
Interior design of the childcare zones not only focuses on the children within the space and their activity sphere but also incorporates the opportunity to expand each volume of space as a result of interconnecting openings. These passageways create new opportunities for interaction and growth among children and childcare providers.
